Ebonised Oak Bowls

Each bowl is hand turned on my lathe from a single piece of solid English Oak, no segmented glues here. The dark outside and base are the result of a processs called ‘Ebonising’. The inside retains the natural appearance of the oak. This contrast emphasises the warm tones of the oak creating a striking, understated design. Equally at home as a fruit bowl, serving nibbles or simply for your car keys or other household items.

Available in sizes from 5cm up to 22cm in diameter. The set of three are particular popular as serving bowls for nibbles.

The Ebonising Process:

A solution is prepared some weeks in advance which consists of steel wool placed in distilled vinegar. The woo eventually dissolves, leaving a rust coloured solution. When applied, a interaction with the tannins cause the oak to turn black almost instantly.

Each bowl is finished with several coats of food safe hard wax oil. A striking statement piece that is equally at home full of your favourite fruit, nibbles or simple displayed for you to look an and enjoy the simple design.
