So nice to make a dining table for an old friend. So nice to make a dining table for an old friend. Matt was fully involved with the design process from start to finish and even helped put it together. We studied photography together back in 1995 and have been friends since. He took the ‘behind the scenes’ photos of me attaching the legs. With a recently completed extension to his home, he wanted a dining table to suit the space. The oak used was all from the same tree with the provenance to prove this. Matt wanted the legs powder coated to match the radiators and door frames. A 6mm stainless steel bar was set into each side. The oak was finished to a mirror like appearance using a technique called raising the grain and sanding up to 600 grit. When the centre differential in my Subaru failed, When the centre differential in my Subaru failed, I thought it would be fun to strip it down and see how the thing works. Turns out it’s a well engineered bit of kit and I was considering ways to share it with others. If I mount it to a piece of oak in it’s complete state, it will simply look like an uninteresting lump of stainless steel. If I pull it apart into it’s component parts, how do I make it ‘make sense’. After a few days procrastinating, it came to me... ‘The puzzle with a ‘diff’erence’ ‘See if you can put it back together, Fun for all the family’ All the separate sections have been hung from hooks on a piece of oak in a random ‘fashion’, ready for someone to try and put it back together correctly. Each unit was designed with a different function in mind and we measured the intended tableware items to ensure they fitted. Paul was immediately confident with the tools having some previous turning experience. A successful artist usually with a brush in his hand, this class gave him an opportunity to try a different creative medium. I make the Ebonising solution with steel wool dissolved in vinegar over the course of a couple of weeks. Once the oak is sanded perfectly smooth, the solution is applied. Interacting with the tannins present in the oak, a rich, dark tone is achieved. The inside remains the natural oak appearance.
