The client wanted a slab table as statement piece of furniture for his apartment in an old converted mill in East London. The table was designed to reflect the buildings industrial past whilst being a functional piece of furniture to be used on a daily basis.
It would need to withstand the punishment of being the focal point of a bachelor pad yet be a place to sit comfortable at whilst reading the sunday papers.
A 90cm wide section of English Oak was used for the table top. The natural edges were retained and sanded smooth. It’s always fascinating to see the the sapwood of English Oak framing the inner growth rings. This particular section of Oak had wonderful grain running throughout the length.
A steel frame was hand distressed and coated with a clear hard wearing lacquer.
