As much as I like to combine oak and steel, I’m fully aware it has to be well considered otherwise it will look too ‘industrial’ or worse still ‘rustic’.
I wanted to design a modern kitchen bar stool incooperating steel and oak stool with strong, geometric lines but also a couple of curves thrown in to soften things up.
The seat is made from solid English oak and has been hand-shaped for comfort. The rear corners have been rounded off to echo the subtle curve of the back.
One of the most important aspects of this design was to ensure the back rest be as comfortable as possible. The piece of oak used for the support was steam bent.
To get the height and angle right, I called upon several different people of all shapes and sizes. These human guinea pigs sat on the stool whilst I alternated the height and angle of the back until I found the optimum position.
The warm tones of the oak are well suited to the silver and black distressed steel frame which has been coated with a hard wearing glossy lacquer.
Part of this service will involve a ‘fitting’ of the stool to ensure it is made as comfortable as possible, providing you with many years of use.
